Meet The Team

Home » Meet The Team

Our mission is to make the Gospel accessible to people of all abilities.
Our hope is to bring people together to read God’s Word, study it, and apply His truth in a life-changing way.  We want to encourage everyone to Act On His Word!

As we gathered to write these Episodes, we were often reminded of how real the disciples were.  Going through the Reader’s Theater scripts has brought out so many details from scripture and moments of, “Wait, that’s actually what it says in the Bible?”.  It helped us see that Jesus chose people, ordinary people, to spend time with Him and work alongside Him. These really weren’t people that would typically be chosen to help save the world. On that same note, it has been very humbling to see how God has chosen us and brought us together as a team to do His work. We don’t feel worthy of this task, and we are depending on Him to do His work.  We continually pray God will use Act On His Word in your life to draw you into a closer relationship with Jesus, no matter where you are in that journey. We have prayed for you.

We’d love to get to know you and we wish we could be a part of each of the Bible Study groups.  Please let us know how we can pray for you, answer your questions, or tell us how this Bible Study has encouraged you to Act On His Word.   Here’s a little bit about us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Charla Holst, OTR/L
Writer, Founder Overcomer Ministries, Inc.

Recently, God gave Charla a dream to develop Act On His Word, an accessible Bible study using the Universal Design for Learning framework, with the goal of making discipleship inclusive to those with disabilities. “I love creating resources to equip churches for Disability Ministry and although this is valuable work, I began praying for a way to more directly share the good news about Jesus.”

Charla serves as founder and President of Overcomer Ministries, Inc. where she provides Christ-Centered Occupational Therapy Consultation, training, sensory regulation tools and resources to churches and ministries to overcome obstacles to Jesus. Her vision is for people of all abilities to have access to learn about Jesus, worship with fellow believers, grow in discipleship and serve in ministry.

Overcomer Ministries, Inc. is an official Shine On: Tim Tebow Foundation Contributor. We are extremely grateful for their assistance in making this dream a reality.
Charla and her husband Dave have 2 adult children, and they have worked together in ministry for over 3 decades of marriage. She is an active member of her local church as Disability Ministry Leader and Children’s Bible Study Teacher. During Charla’s 32-year career as an Occupational Therapist, she has authored 3 books: Empowering Occupational Therapy, All That I Want To Be, and Control Is My Goal. You can find all the Overcomer Ministry resources here.

Dr. Milton James Keys
Theologian, Writer, Video Teacher

Dr. Keys is theologian, writer and video teacher for Act On His Word. As a disability theologian, Dr. Keys has been working to promote the rights of people with disabilities and to create a more inclusive society. His writings and speeches are aimed at inspiring and empowering people to overcome their challenges and to achieve their goals.

Three words adequately describe Dr. Keys: Preacher, Teacher, and Producer. Keys uses these three gifts to change the world. Although he was born with cerebral palsy and a bleak prognosis diagnosis, Milton hasn’t let anything stop him from achieving his goals. Despite being given a two-year life expectancy with severe cognitive disabilities, Milton has earned 3 degrees. He has produced and released 13 musical albums, 4 plays, 1 ballet, held 8 youth summits, and completed numerous projects in the last two and a half decades.

More importantly, Reverend Keys is a child of God and a preacher of the Gospel, who has been in ministry for 25 years. He became an ordained minister in 2007 and received his Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary in 2017. In 2023 Milton received his Doctorate of Ministry from Christian Theological Seminary. He has delivered sermons to congregations at services, conferences, and national conventions throughout the United States. He has also lectured students of all ages through motivational speaking and poetry. You can find out more about his ministry, Advocates Embassy, here.

Bridget Moots
Project Manager, Digital Designer

Bridget’s faith drives her desire to serve the Lord in multiple ministries, including Overcomer Ministries, which led to her involvement in Act On His Word. She also serves in her home church leading Sunday morning worship, teaching in the children’s class, and acting as Administrative Coordinator. “I’m always in awe that God chooses to use me for His glory,” Bridget says.

Bridget has over 13 years of experience in the tech industry, specializing in project management, application solution design, and leading technology teams. Throughout her career, she gained a deep understanding of how to turn business requirements into impactful digital solutions. Her ability to combine technical expertise with a focus on user experience has been a cornerstone of her work.

But Bridget’s journey goes beyond her professional achievements. She met Jesus at the age of 13, and after many ups and downs, she rededicated her life to Him 18 years later. She is happily married to her loving husband, Justin, and they have three wonderful kids who fill her life with love and joy. Her faith has been a guiding light in both her personal and professional life, and she’s incredibly grateful for God’s unwavering faithfulness. Bridget hopes users will find this website intuitive and highly accessible, but more importantly, that many will experience the transformative power of faith in Jesus.

James Phillips
Playwright

Having grown up in the church in Missouri, James made the personal decision to follow Christ around age nine. “I think most of us who came to Christ Jesus at an early age know all too well that discipleship can be a lengthy process,” says James. “I’ve always related to Peter in particular, who at one moment can be bold and outspoken in his faith regarding Jesus, and the next be sinking into the Sea of Galilee.”

James’ hope is that, in addition to introducing people to Jesus, people see that discipleship is a process, perhaps lifelong, and that we will struggle, even fail at times, as Peter did. But like Peter, James desires that we will strive to go deeper into a relationship with Jesus, the Messiah-the Savior of the world. For as Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) James added, “I’m proud to be a part of this writing team and this project for Act On His Word. There is nothing that feels better than to be used by God while doing something you love.”

James graduated from University of Missouri-Columbia in 1988 with a B.A. in Theater. He moved to California in January of 1989 to pursue work in theater, film, and television and appeared in many TV shows and some films. In 1998 James began a 24 year career with SoCal Gas Company, but he always kept working at writing and acting, performing in several churches and continuing with acting classes as well. In 2015 he landed the role of “Bo” in “My Best Friend (2016)”, a children’s/family movie. Now retired from utility work, James is back in Missouri and back to writing, where he feels, for now, he can make the biggest impact. “Some of my best moments in the arts were at churches,” says James. “But I believe all good art points to God.”

We are so grateful for the incredible editors of Act On His Word!  This project would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of Betty Carbone and Jill Jensen. We also thank Melissa Buchanan and Jessica Williams for their editing contributions.
